TELPAS Online Speaking Assessment Rubrics

Informational Only:

TEA has provided districts with scoring rubrics (links are below) for the Speaking portion of the TELPAS online assessment.  For example, the Four-Point rubric has 5 language proficiency criteria that are used to assign points:  Completeness of Response; Syntax/Sentence Structure, Grammar; Vocabulary/Word Choice; Pronunciation and Fluency; and Use of L1 (first language).  Here is the first criterion for the Four-Point rubric:

One method to ensure success during the Speaking portion of the test is to have students write their responses down before recording them.  This will give them more confidence while speaking and minimize deletions and re-recordings of responses.

It is essential that students be given the opportunity to practice these skills prior to taking the TELPAS online assessments.  Campus Testing Coordinators should be arranging practice time for all LEP students.
