Reading Support For Parents

We all know that a parent reading with their child is one of the best ways they can help strengthen their child’s growth in reading.  The benefits of reading with their child go far beyond helping them with decoding words and learning vocabulary. It provides parents an opportunity to bond with their child relating the story to their child’s personal experiences or use the book as point for starting a conversation about feelings or important life lessons.

But how does a parent know that the book they have selected is at the appropriate reading level for their child?  Laura Galloway, ELA Instructional Coach at Branch Elementary, has created a great tool to help parents see what a book on their child’s instructional level looks like, how the child is assessed to determine their reading level, and offers suggestions in which parents can help support their child when reading with them.
