The first step listed in the 7 Steps to a Language-Rich Interactive Classroom is “teaching students what to say when they don’t know what to say”.
Bryan Collegiate High School created a great tool for students and teachers that will address this step in a concrete and supportive way.
Take a look at this What if I Don’t Know PDF and consider printing these and attaching them to each student desk in your classroom. This will give your ELLs, as well as ALL of your other students, a quick easy reference to which they can refer when they don’t know the answer.
