Middle and high school teachers across the district are turning their classrooms into Reader’s and Writer’s Workshops. Michele Boriskie from Davila MS is a #RockSolid teacher. When getting started with the workshop model, she takes into consideration the importance of allowing students to have choice in their independent reading novel. One way to support your students in making the right selection is to incorporate a “book walk” activity in which students have the opportunity to preview books by reading the title, summary, and possibly the first couple pages of the book. Students can make a list of titles they are interested in reading (and even those they are not interested in reading) in their composition notebook and refer to this list as they select novels throughout the year.
