Roadmap to Responsibility

The Mitchell Elementary staff has implemented Give ’em Five as a strategy to empower students to help solve their own problems. Teachers are trained to assist students in reflecting on the shared campus-wide expectations, examine the breakdown of those expectations, and determine the benefits to students if they adhere to the expectations. The tone of the conversation is respectful and encourages the student to take responsibility for solving his or her own problem.

“We want students to grow in maturity and responsibility, not just to comply based on external force. Using the roadmap to responsibility means giving children the time and tools necessary to increase their critical thinking skills, to improve their confidence, and to enhance their ability to solve their own problems.”

“Students appreciate the consistency, sense of fairness, and mutual respect that a responsibility centered culture brings to schools and classrooms. Educators appreciate its simplicity, reduced stress, and peace of mind that comes with having a plan they can use in each and every situation.”
