Celebrating Positive Behavior

Mitchell Elementary is committed to celebrating the great behaviors of our students on campus. Many of our strategies encourage students to demonstrate their Bulldog BEST. These ideas include: (1) Believe in yourself, (2) Encourage others, (3) Show ownership, and 4) Take part in the team. Here are just a few of the strategies we’ve implemented:

  • Bulldog Blast ~ Teachers and students can recognize students for showing their Bulldog BEST. These Blasts are read each morning on the announcements. If your child receives a blast, it is sent home to share with parents. You are welcome to join us daily at 7:25 a.m. using this Morning Announcement Link.
  • PAWS ~ When the administration see a whole class demonstrating their Bulldog BEST, they earn a PAW. Once a class earns 5 PAWS, they get an extra recess.
  • Movie Tickets ~ Each day, grade levels can earn a ticket in the cafeteria if they follow general safety protocols and indoor voice levels at lunch. If they earn 3 tickets during the week, they may watch a movie during lunch on Friday.
  • Wonderful Wednesday ~ Each Wednesday during the morning announcements, students are able to watch a Bulldog Update video with students answering various questions about school. (This past week, we learned about some favorite meals in the cafeteria.) During lunch on Wednesday, students will participate in a modified Bulldog Rally to celebrate all things for their grade level.
  • Birthday Celebrations ~ While this isn’t based on behavior, it is a great way to celebrate our students. Each morning, all birthday friends are identified on the announcements and invited to visit the principal’s office. When they arrive in Ms. Hedstrom’s office, they choose a birthday bracelet, birthday pencil, birthday bookmark, and birthday book for them to keep.
  • Class/Grade Level Incentives ~ Each grade level incorporates their own strategies based on targeted skills. Some earn Bulldog Bucks, some earn points. These “tokens” can be redeemed for various activities or rewards.

Drug Free

We are so proud of the effort our students and staff put into Red Ribbon Week! We know that dressing up does not protect our children from the threat of drug or alcohol abuse, but we are committed to teaching our students about the importance of making healthy choices for life!

Parent Conferences

Mitchell Elementary teachers would like to meet with parents during October to discuss each student’s beginning of the year data and academic goals for the year.

Parent Conferences can be scheduled:

  • over the phone, virtually through a Hangout or Zoom meeting, or in person
  • before school, during the teacher’s conference, or after school
  • during the day on Monday, October 19 (Kinder and 3rd Grade), Tuesday, October 20 (1st and 2nd Grade), or Wednesday, October 21 (Pre-K and 4th Grade)

We look forward to partnering with you this year!

Bulldog Blast

Each morning during the daily announcements, we blast out names of some amazing students who got caught doing something great! We celebrate those who notice the good things, and we celebrate the behaviors of those who were noticed.

Teachers can recognize students.

Students can recognize students.

Our Bulldog B.E.S.T. is on display when students and staff are choosing to encourage others! And we are seeing positive behaviors spread because students choose to show ownership and take part in the team.

Practice Makes Perfect

We show our Bulldog BEST when we

  • Believe in ourself,
  • Encourage others,
  • Show ownership, and
  • Take part in the team.

We also show our Bulldog BEST when we practice difficult tasks so we can get better – whether it’s academics or behaviors.

  • Our students practice difficult academic tasks during our Bulldog U intervention period, working with teachers or tutors on targeted areas of improvement. They practice in the classroom within small groups or through independent practice. Our teachers are committed to working with our students so they can get better.
  • Mitchell Elementary has implemented Practice Academy for our students who are struggling with social skills or disruptive behaviors in the classroom. We believe that practice, not punishment, is the first step in changing behavior. Our teachers and administration are committed to working with our students so they can get better.

If you have questions about Academic Interventions, contact your child’s teacher or the Principal, Shari Hedstrom, at shari.hedstrom@bryanisd.org. If you have questions about Practice Academy, contact the Assistant Principal, Sharyn Womble, at sharyn.womble@bryanisd.org.

Face Masks

Harvey Mitchell and Ms. Hedstrom want to remind you that masks will be required for all Bryan ISD students (PreK-12 grade) at the beginning of the 2nd Six Weeks on Monday, September 28.

Thanks to our students & staff who have done a fantastic job of wearing facial coverings so far. We appreciate your continued support.

Six Weeks Transition

The first six weeks ends on Friday. Students will have this week to finalize all assignments in the grade book. Please check with your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns.

During the 1st six weeks, we had 139 students (37%) who were participating in At-Home learning. Many students plan to return to On-Campus learning beginning September 28. Currently, we only have 66 students (17%) who have signed up for At-Home learning for the 2nd six weeks.

While we have sought to provide a quality education through Schoology, we have also found that grades and attendance are far below the performance of our On-Campus learners. In addition, opportunities for math and reading intervention will begin fully during the 2nd six weeks, and At-Home students will miss out on these foundational learning experiences.

Mitchell Elementary is still taking requests to change from At-Home to On-Campus learning. If you feel this would help your child academically and socially, please contact Heaven Wells at 209-1400.

We look forward to providing a quality education for all students. We ask that you partner with us by sending your On-Campus child to school every day or ensuring your At-Home child completes all Schoology assignments every day.

If you have already submitted the form to change, or if you do not wish to change your child’s instructional model for the second six weeks of school, you do not need to do anything.

If you would like to change your child’s instructional model for the 2nd Six Weeks of school and have not filled out the form, you must click here and fill out this form before Monday, September 14.

You must complete a form for each child you would like to change for the 2nd Six Weeks.

The 2nd Six Weeks of school will begin on Monday, September 28.

Please note, beginning the 2nd Six Weeks of school, children in grades prekindergarten through 2nd will be required to wear face masks.  Children in grades 3-12 are already required to wear face masks.
