November – Teacher of the Month

The staff and students of Bryan Collegiate High School proudly nominate Ms. Kaitlin Labus as the Bryan ISD secondary teacher of the month for November 2019.  Ms. Labus has been at Bryan Collegiate since her student teaching semester in the fall of 2018 and she has grown to be an integral part of Bryan Collegiate and we want to tell you why she should be Bryan ISD’s secondary teacher of the month and how she embodies the Essential Eight characteristic of OPTIMISM!

Since starting her career last year at Bryan Collegiate, Kaitlin has stepped up to the plate with everything she has been asked to do.  After completing her student teaching semester in the Fall of 2018, we knew that her mentor teacher would be going out on maternity leave around spring break of the spring semester.  We asked Kaitlin if she would be interested in taking on the long-term sub position and without hesitation, she said she would take the job! This helped to create a seamless transition from teacher of record to long term substitute without any interruption in classroom expectations or loss of instructional time.

Ms. Labus has also been instrumental in helping to keep the Bryan Collegiate Learning Community Games going from year to year.  The learning community games are events organized in the middle of the day during a student’s learning community that give some levity to the routine day to day activities – musical chairs, the human knot, ultimate rock-paper-scissors, etc…  She spends time throughout the week creating these games, organizing the teams, and organizing prizes. These games are one of the things that make Bryan Collegiate unique, and Ms. Labus makes it happen.

Kaitlin’s colleague in Geometry was out on maternity leave this year, and Kaitlin was instrumental in helping the students in the other teacher’s class not miss a beat; she offered tutorials for the other teacher’s students, she helped facilitate the Cheer Club for the other teacher in her absence, and she always kept a positive attitude.  One of her colleagues commented that “many students in my study hall always shared how lucky they were to have Ms. Labus’ support in the other teacher’s absence. In addition, Ms. Labus likes to implement innovative strategies in order to improve her teaching skills. her enthusiasm to teach her students and the kindness she displays in contagious”.

Kaitlin’s incredible optimistic and can-do attitude has consistently demonstrated what it takes to be successful in and out of the classroom.  She is a positive role model for all of our students and a tremendous asset to the BCHS community for enriching the lives of so many current and former BCHS students.  It is for these reasons that we are proud to nominate Ms. Kaitlin Labus for the Bryan Collegiate High School teacher of the month for November 2019.
